Cedar Ridge Residence
A 3,200 sq ft modern home nestled into the Ozark hillside, designed to maximize natural light and blur the line between indoor and outdoor living.
The Cedar Ridge Residence sits on a gently sloping two-acre site overlooking the western Ozark valley. The clients — a young family returning to Northwest Arkansas — wanted a home that felt rooted in the landscape while embracing contemporary design principles.
Design Approach
We oriented the home along an east-west axis to capture morning light in the living areas and frame sunset views from the primary suite. The floor plan unfolds as a series of connected pavilions, each stepping down the hillside to follow the natural grade.
Materials & Craft
Local limestone anchors the base of the home, transitioning to charred cedar cladding on the upper volumes. Floor-to-ceiling glazing on the south elevation opens onto a cantilevered deck that extends the living space into the tree canopy.
Sustainability
Passive solar strategies, a high-performance building envelope, and a geothermal HVAC system reduce the home’s energy consumption by an estimated 40% compared to conventional construction. Native landscaping eliminates the need for irrigation.
